Repetto
The history of Repetto goes back to the year 1947 to a tiny workshop near the Paris National Opera. Back then Rose Repetto, the founder for the brand, created her first ballet shoes following the advice of her son ballet dancer and choreographer Roland Petit. But the most important milestone for Repetto was when Brigitte Bardot wore the legendary Cendrillon in patent red in the film Et Dieu… créa la femme. Bardot was training as a ballerina in that time and asked Rose to create a shoe that was light and comfortable as a dance slipper but proper for everyday wear: The idea for one of the world´s most popular shoe was born in that moment.
In 1959 Rose opened her first boutique 22 Rue de la Paix in Paris which became the trusted place for the world´s best prima ballerinas. A decade later one of the French most appreciated musicians, a multi-talent Serge Gainsbourg got fascinated by the style Zizi in white. He was so welded to the shoe that he would wear them all year around. His wife Jane Birkin had found the shoes from sale and bought them for him. "He wanted shoes that felt like gloves, so I got him white Repetto ballet shoes," Birkin told Vanity Fair in 2007. Gainsbourg isn´t the only man who loves the style: Stars like Mick Jagger and a significant part of the french men is hooked to this laced flat shoe. Originally Rose created the shoe for Zizi Jeanmaire who is her daughter in law and a ballet dancer known from her androgynous presence and style. Exactly what the Zizi shoe is as well: A blend of lace-up oxford shoe and ballerina shoe. The style exhales a perfect blend of feminine and masculine style.
In 2009 Repetto created another strong style that has left a significant mark in our fashion history: The Michael loafer. Or known as Jackson loafer for others. This loafer was established as a tribute to Michael Jackson. The shoe became so popular right after the release that the brand needed to create a waiting list and increase the production. As a Jackson fan Kate Moss has kept this loafer as her signature shoe. She even wore the Jackson loafer at the funeral for the King of Pop. Over the years several other Repetto styles as well like Rose and Electra Mary-Jane have became frequently used essentials in Kate Moss´s style.
And anyone who has worn a pair of Zizi, Michael or any style from Repetto knows how amazingly comfortable Repetto flats are. All the shoes are still made using the famous 'stitch and return' method with the extreme skill and knowledge. This same technique is applied to all real ballet and dance shoes that professional dancers use. After the take over of the Jean-Marc Gaucher the brand has done several partnerships with well known designers and brands including Karl Lagerfeld, Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto and Comme des Garçons. The attraction remains to this day and the brand is prefereed by many celebrities such as Alexa Chung, Sarah Jessica Parker, Catherine Deneuve, Angelina Jolie, Jane Fonda, Scarlett Johansson and Isabelle Guérin.
Few years back Repetto answered to clients request and developed “The Mythique Rubber” -line. This line features all the classic Repetto models with rubber sole for wet and cold conditions and for the extended comfort with thicker insole. This line includes styles like Maestro: Michael loafer with rubber sole. Lili the rubber version for Cendrillon and Charlotte and Lucie: a rubber Zizi.
